Menstrual cramps are pains in the abdomen and pelvic areas experienced by a woman as a result of her menstrual period. Most women have menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods.
The cramping sensation is intensified when clots or pieces of bloody tissue from the lining pass through the cervix, especially if a woman’s cervical is narrow.
They are usually caused by uterine contractions that occur in response to prostaglandins and other chemicals.
Below are tips to help you relieve menstrual cramps;
1. Stay active. Do some exercise
According to research, women who exercise regularly have less menstrual pain. Exercising regularly before, during and after your ovulation will benefit your entire body especially if you’re prone to painful menstrual cramps.
During menstruation, the female hormones are at its lowest. The system’s defense system is weakened as well as the energy levels, so rest as much as you can to regain energy.
3. Eat Right
In most cases, women experience more stress and intense mood swing during their menstrual period. However, through avoiding certain food items and eating just the right ones, you may still feel comfortable and stress-free.
It is advisable to stay away from oily food, processed foods and animal fats in general. Eating green vegetables can help you relax your system and prevent excessive flow of blood clots.
Heat helps to relax uterine muscles that are contracting. You can use heating pad or even a hot water bottle on your abdomen and you will get some relief from the pain. Taking a warm bath may also provide some relief.
5. Stay Away from Alcohol
Alcohol stores up water in your body which can cause excessive bloating and aggravate menstrual cramps. It can also lower magnesium levels in your body which are used to regulate muscle function and blood sugar levels.Note: Menstrual cramps are just you feeling your uterus contract to shed its lining.
