Healthy hair is a result of a combination of what you eat and the products you apply on your hair. To a large extent, your diet determines how healthy your hair is. That is why it is important to eat a healthy, balanced diet regularly; this helps to keep your hair glowing and healthy all the time.
Here are a few tips that can help you achieve healthy, beautiful hair:
Learn your hair type
You need to understand your hair type so as to know how to properly care for it. For example, contrary to misconceptions, afro or kinky hair is very fragile and prone to breakage. Therefore, you need to handle it with care and keep it moisturized.
Staying hydrated helps your hair to grow faster. Drinking plenty water promotes healthy activity in your body including hair growth and gloss.
Take Omega-3 Fatty Acids
The body needs omega-3 fatty acids for healthy hair growth. Omega-3 can be found in foods like salmon, mackerel, trout, avocado, and walnuts.
Use Coconut Oil
Reports show that coconut oil improves blood flow by promoting efficient thyroid gland activity. This circulates more oxygen to cells in the body giving hair follicles sufficient oxygen to grow. You can use coconut oil directly on the hair and you can also use it in cooking, substituting virgin coconut oil for other vegetable oils.
Use shampoo mildly
Shampoos are known to contain the same ingredient as laundry detergent. You can dilute shampoo with 50% water to make it milder while adding some conditioner. If there is product build up in your hair, use a mud rinse in your hair instead of drying soap.
Use organic products
Choose organic products and avoid products with mineral oils and petrolatum. Mineral oils and petrolatum will dry your hair out and stop moisture from penetrating the shaft. Natural oils like almond, coconut oil, and jojoba oils are much better.
Avoid using grease on your hair or scalp
Your hair needs extra moisture, therefore you need to stay away from products with petroleum. Petroleum makes hair stiff, dry and greasy. Instead of grease, use natural oils like coconut, jojoba, olive, or castor. You can also use natural shampoos and conditioners which are great for your hair because they don’t have all the sulfates, sodiums, and preservatives in them. They also give your hair a nice shine to it. Grape seed oil is very light and can withstand high temperatures without burning; this helps control heat damage if you use heat-styling products on your hair.
Avoid heat on your hair
Cut down on heat styling products as much as possible and ensure you use heat protection shampoos and/or moisturizer, or a good serum/spray on your hair before flat ironing or curling.
Try a protein treatment
Use protein treatments monthly this could be an Aphogee treatment or use egg in your hair before washing it all out. Protein will make your hair less prone to breakage and over-moisturizing. It would also make your hair shinier. Be careful not to overuse protein in your hair otherwise, it will start to break off.
Use a wide tooth comb for your hair; avoid using bristle brushes or thin combs which will get caught in your hair and pull it off. You do not have to comb your hair daily, particularly if you are a black woman; just detangle with your fingers. Excessive combing will make your hair prone to breakage.
